Aviary
It's a mess, isn't it? This one will be getting a fairly major makeover. It needs a door and glass windows and a million other things. Since I can no longer have ferrets due to allergies, I'm looking forward to having birds again. Eventually this should be a pretty garden room with plants and fountains. Right now it's my everything room. I seem to have quite a few of those, come to think of it. Most of my tools are stored here. It's a nice central location for everything. Needs to be organized though. I'm deliberately putting it off so that I can get a bit more of the main house done. This would definitely distract me. |
And BAM! Done. Unfortunately I didn't get to show much of the process of this room coming to completion, because the camera usually wasn't home when we were working on things. It's gone remarkably fast, though. I had lots of help. Dave helped me put up the window frames, Norman installed the door, my Mom spent a few hours sponge painting with me, and Dad lent his aid in putting together a little grotto for the fountain. I even did some sheetrocking. This is darned funny, since I don't know how to sheetrock. If the place falls apart in a month, we'll know that I did it wrong. It's amazing how different it looks now that it's a real room, and not just an area. I still have to put glass in the windows, but it photographs better this way anyway. |

So now it's a pretty little oasis--located, as are so many oasi--right off the dining room. There will be numerous shiny and sparkly things for the birds to play with, and it will be a nice little nook for me to spend time with them. The table is actually plastic, and can easily be removed and hosed off, should it become necessary. The room has to be completely cut off from the rest of the house. Zack and birds will not mix. I just hope he doesn't spend all his time barking at them. That would get old. The cage is more than large enough for two cockatiels. They'll get supervised time out in the room, and maybe we'll graduate to the original plan of them being out all the time, once I'm certain that all is safe for them. |

The fountain became kind of a focal point. It will also be a bathtub. I spent quite a bit of time arranging rocks and stepping surfaces so that nobody drowns. I'm planning on doing a mosaic top to the fountain enclosure. More shinies for curious beaks. I met and purchased the new babies today, but I won't be bringing them home for another week or so. The housewarming is coming up, and I think they'd probably have little avian heart attacks if they were trying to settle in while forty some people stared through the windows at them. Next week will be more quiet. |
