Yesterday was very productive. My job as you can see, was to pick up our lighting order at Home Depot. That was an experience. I mean, there aren't many ways to respond to the comment, "Wow, that sure is a lot of lights." I don't know why, but all the other customers seemed to find my big orange cart of illumination endlessly fascinating.

For no reason that I could fathom, the cashier seemed to take a great deal of sadistic pleasure in telling me that I'd just missed a 30 percent off sale on all ceiling fans--which would have saved me a couple hundred dollars. His obvious glee over my misfortune is the reason I don't feel terribly guilty about the fact that I'm almost sure he forgot to charge me for one of them. I may be wrong--I haven't actually checked the receipt--but if I AM right it would make us about even.

The lights are now labeled and stacked in the basement, waiting to move into their new homes all over the house. The reason that there's space for them down in the 'ol Pit of Darkness is because the cabinets that were down there are now up here--tantalizingly close to the kitchen. That's right! They are making their move! Duane the finish carpenter tells me they should be installed before we leave on our vacation. I am absolutely beside myself with happiness.

He was hard at work on them when I left. The order of business appears to be as follows:

Measure, heft, straighten, clamp, drill, screw, curse Home Depot, repeat.

Today it looked like this. All that's left is to install the island (which would be at the front left of the photo) and to put the doors back on. It's almost like a real live kitchen, except for the lack of countertops, appliances, dishes, electricity or running water.

I can't believe that we're going away NOW, just when things are starting to get going inside! For the first time in my life, I can't wait to get home from Pennsic. (I'm sure that attitude will last right up until the moment I get there, and then for two blissful weeks I'll live in my other dream house and try not to dwell on this one.)

No more updates for a couple weeks, but the next one should be a good one.
